Today, Guylaine and Wash went for a long phot walk around the river and ponds to try and photograph waterfowl before their winter migration
They found what they were looking for at the edge of a small pond where a wood duck (called a Carolina duck in Europe) readily posed for them.

Okay, this photo is a composite made from his photo is a composite made from a photo I took of Guylaine and Wash by the small pond we just built at home, because, in reality, the wood duck measures more than 45 to 55 cm from head to tail, and weighs 450 to 850 grams; the two dolls would have looked Lilliputian next to the real bird.
Here is the real one, photographed at the river almost a month ago.
During their first few weeks of life, ducklings need protein for rapid growth, so they consume a large quantity of animal food, mainly aquatic insects, spiders, small crustaceans, and snails.
As adults, their diet becomes vegetarian, consisting of acorns, the seeds of aquatic plants (duckweed, pondweed, sedges), as well as small fruits and berries. During their winter migration, they also eat corn or wheat grains found in fields during their stopovers.
This duck, originally American, was introduced to Europe as an ornamental animal in the 18th century. The imported pairs had been taken from North Carolina, hence the French name "canard carolin" (Carolinian duck). Some individuals escaped from the cages where they were kept and reproduced in the wild.
The female is much duller than the male, as is often the case with birds (photo from the internet; she didn't pose for Wash and Guylaine's cameras that day).

By the riverbank, where the wild cherries had already lost their beautiful red color and ripened...
...to the great delight of the birds (here, an American Robin).
Aside from their very different plumage, the American Robin and the European Blackbird are similar in size, behavior, and diet.
However, they have two other differences: the American Robin migrates south in winter, and their songs are completely different. Listen to the American Robin's song here compared to the Blackbird's song here.

After this long hike, as the day began to wane, Guylaine and Wash returned to the car and sat for a while to drink and chat.
Wash was surprised by Guylaine's energy during the hike.
- Well, you sleep like a log at evening and there's no way to drag you out of bed in the morning, but during the day, I have to try and keep up with you!
- It's true, I feel bursting with energy: we're moving into our own apartment next week, just the two of us, I got my PhD which officially landed me my dream job, and with a good salary... In short, I'm happy, and I wish everyone could be as happy as we are!
- And me, I'm happy that you're happy...

...but next time, slow down a little, otherwise I'll end up having trouble keeping up with you!!
