Dimanche après-midi, Wash est allé aider Tamsir à effectuer quelques travaux d'entretien sur la petite parcelle de terrain derrière la maison : taille, tonte, et ainsi de suite. Leur relation relevant davantage de l'amitié que du lien propriétaire-locataire, ils prenaient plaisir à travailler ensemble.

Salma est descendue les voir quelques instants et, avant de remonter à son étage, en a profité pour passer saluer Guylaine. Sentant que la jeune femme souhaitait aborder un sujet particulier, Guylaine l'a aussitôt invitée à prendre un café.

On Sunday afternoon, Wash went to help Tamsir with some maintenance work on the small plot of land behind the house—pruning, mowing, and the like. Since their relationship is based more on friendship than on the landlord-tenant dynamic, they enjoyed working together.

Salma came down to see them for a few moments and, before heading back upstairs, took the opportunity to stop and say hello to Guylaine. Sensing that the young woman wanted to bring up a specific topic, Guylaine immediately invited her in for coffee.

Après avoir échangé quelques banalités sur divers sujets, Salma finit par poser la question pour laquelle elle était apparemment venue.

- La petite amie de mon frère, Jasmine... c'est bien ton amie d'enfance, n'est-ce pas ?

After some casual conversation about various topics, Salma finally asked the question she had seemingly come to ask.

"My brother's girlfriend, Jasmine, she's your childhood friend, isn't she?"

- Oui. Jasmine, Heidi et moi nous connaissons depuis l'âge de douze ans ; à l'époque, nous étions de vraies petites pestes. Heidi excellait en littérature, Jasmine en histoire et en éthique, et moi en sciences et technologies ; alors, on s'entraidait... enfin, façon de parler : on faisait les devoirs les unes des autres dans nos domaines de prédilection respectifs ! Et même si nous avons suivi des voies différentes à l'université, nous sommes toujours aussi proches... sauf qu'on ne triche plus !

"Yes. Jasmine, Heidi, and I have known each other since we were twelve and quite real little brats. Heidi excelled in literature, Jasmine in history and ethics, and I in science and technology, so we helped each other out... Ahem! with doing each other's homework each in her own field of expertise!  And even though we chose different paths in university, we’re still just as close—except we don't cheat anymore!"

Salma sourit.

- C'est beau d'être restées amies aussi longtemps, c'est une grande chance pour vous trois.

Salma smiled.
"It’s wonderful that you’ve stayed friends for so long; it’s a real blessing for the three of you."

Puis elle en vint au vif du sujet.

- Puisque vous êtes si proches, t'a-t-elle dit quelque chose au sujet de mon frère ? Je sais qu'elle est enceinte, il me l'a dit. Il en était inquiet car, tout en étant pleinement conscient de ses responsabilités, il craint de finir par agir comme notre père, qui était, pour parler franchement, un homme odieux qui a fait vivre un enfer à notre mère et à a nous deux. À cause de lui, nous avons vécu dans la précarité durant toute notre enfance en France ; il a abandonné notre mère, la laissant avec une montagne de dettes de jeu, des dettes dont elle a dû répondre car il avait falsifié sa signature pour contracter des prêts avant de disparaître sans laisser de trace. Mon frère a toujours été un fêtard et un coureur de jupons invétéré, et il a peur que ce trait soit inscrit dans ses gènes. Je lui ai dit que ça ne fonctionnait pas comme ça, et je l’ai assuré que rien ne l’empêcherait d’être un homme bien s’il le voulait vraiment.

Then she got to the heart of the matter.
"Since you’re so close, has she said anything to you about my brother? I know she’s pregnant, he told me. He was worried because, while he was fully aware of his responsibilities, but also afraid of acting like our father, who was, to put it bluntly, a truly awful man who made life hell for our mother and the two of us. Because of him, we lived in precarity throughout our childhood in France; he walked out on our mother, leaving her with a mountain of gambling debts ; debts she was held liable for because he had forged her signature to take out loans before vanishing without a trace. My brother has always been a party animal and an inveterate womanizer, and he’s afraid that trait is in his genes. I told him it doesn't work that way, and assured him that nothing would stop him from being a good man if he truly wanted to be.

... Lui et moi n'avons jamais été proches avant de nous retrouver ici. À la maison, nous étions presque des étrangers, des personnes totalement aux antipodes l'une de l'autre : lui, un fêtard insouciant ; moi, obsédée par la réussite sociale et mes études. Nous n'avions rien en commun, si ce n'est notre mère. Mais ici, en terre étrangère, nous avons discuté, appris à nous comprendre, je l'ai vu sous un jour nouveau, je crois que lui aussi, et nous nous sommes réconciliés ; nous n'avons jamais été aussi proches. C'est pour cela que je m'inquiète pour lui.

... He and I were never close before we ended up here. Back home, we were practically strangers—polar opposites: he was a carefree party animal, while I was obsessed with social success and my studies. We had nothing in common other than our mother. But here, on foreign soil, we’ve talked, learned to understand each other, I saw him in a new light, I think he did too. and we reconciled; we’ve never been closer. That’s why I’m worried about him.

... Il a dû se passer quelque chose avec Jasmine parce que c'est le troisième soir que Nabil vient manger avec nous, comme s'il ne voulait même pas affronter ses amis photographes, tout en ne voulant pas rester seul, et il a n'a vraiment pas l'air dans son assiette, il est là physiquement, mais on dirait qu’il est ailleurs. Il ne sort pas ses habituelles blagues idiotes et il ne mange presque rien. Alors, je m’inquiète vraiment.

... Something must have happened with Jasmine, because this is the third night in a row Nabil has come to eat with us, as if he doesn't even want to face his photographer friends, while not wanting to be alone,. He really doesn't seem himself; he looks like he’s here physically but like he were somewhere else. He isn't cracking his usual silly jokes, and he’s barely eating a thing. So, I’m really worried.

Guylaine a écouté Salma sans rien dire (se contentant d'avaler des biscuits et du café à un rythme assez soutenu !). Elle a réfléchi un moment en silence, hésitant entre dire ce que Jasmine avait expliqué à l'association ou se taire. Finalement, elle décida de parler.

- Oui, je sais ce qui s'est passé.

Guylaine listened to Salma without saying a word (contenting herself with downing biscuits and coffee at a pretty brisk pace!). She thought for a moment in silence, torn between revealing what Jasmine had explained at the association and keeping quiet. Finally, she decided to speak.
- Yes, I know what happened.

- Peux-tu me le confier ou bien est-ce une confidence que tu ne peux pas partager ?

''Can you tell me, or is it a confidence you can't share?''

- Je peux te le dire, après tout, elle nous l'a dit à nous, ses amies, et à ma grand-mère aussi, alors...

''I can tell you; after all, she told us—her friends—and my grandmother too, so...''

... ton frère a proposé à Jasmine de l'épouser, en lui donnant comme argument qu'il fallait que cet enfant ait un père !

... ''your brother asked Jasmine to marry him, arguing that the child needed a father!''

... mais sans la moindre référence à des sentiments. Jasmine est persuadée qu'il ne l'aime pas vraiment et qu'il ne veut que régulariser la situation de l'enfant. Elle a été très blessée par cette proposition, et elle l'a refusée, ... et je crois que j'en aurais fait autant à sa place.

... but not the slightest mention of feelings. Jasmine is convinced he doesn't really love her and only wants to legitimize the child's status. She was deeply hurt by that proposal and turned it down... and I think I would have done the same in her shoes.

- Oh là là ! Moi aussi ! s'exclama Salma. Ça lui ressemble tout à fait, à mon frère. Il joue les durs et dissimule ses sentiments autant qu'il peut pour masquer sa vulnérabilité. Je l'ai connu comme ça toute ma vie ; ce n'est que l'hiver dernier que j'ai découvert la tendresse qu'il garde enfouie au fond de lui... après vingt-quatre ans ! Tu imagines à quel point il est doué pour la cacher ?!

''Oh my God! Me too! Salma exclaimed. That sounds just like my brother. He puts on a tough act and hides his feelings as much as he can to mask his vulnerability. I thought he was like that my whole life; I only discovered the tenderness he keeps buried deep inside this past winter—after twenty-four years! Can you imagine how good he is at hiding it?!''

... Mais il l'aime vraiment ! Sinon, je le connais, il ne se laisserait pas mener par le bout du nez comme elle le fait ! Comment le faire comprendre à Jasmine ?

... ''But he really loves her! Otherwise—I know him—he wouldn't let her lead him around by the nose the way she does! How can we make Jasmine understand that?''

- Nous ne pouvons pas le lui faire comprendre, ni toi, ni moi. Il faut que ça soit lui qui lui dise, qui s'ouvre à elle et qui lui avoue qu'il l'aime vraiment, avec ou sans enfant !

''We can't make her understand—neither you nor I. He has to be the one to tell her, to open up and admit that he truly loves her, with or without a child!''

- Oh là là… J’ai l’impression que je vais devoir jouer un rôle inhabituel avec lui : celui de la grande sœur qui remet son petit frère sur le droit chemin et lui donne des conseils !

- Bon courage, mais je suis sûre que tu vas y arriver !

- J'aimerais avoir ta foi dans ma réussite !

''Boy... I have a feeling I’m going to have to take on a role I’m not used to with him: the big sister who sets her little brother straight and gives him some advice!''
''Good luck—but I’m sure you can do it!''
''I wish I had your faith in my success!''

- Au fait, c'est demain que tu commences à travailler au centre d'accueil du parc ?

''By the way, I think you start working at the park’s visitor center tomorrow?''

- Oui, et j'en ai l'estomac noué à l'avance, j'espère tellement que tout se passera bien et que je vais convenir au poste. J'ai parfois un sale caractère, ça m'inquiète. En fait, c'est étrange d'être ici avec toi, la fille de mon employeur, et de connaître autant de personnes qui travaillent pour ton père au parc, avec cette ambiance chaleureuse qui semble régner entre presque tous les employés, du moins au premier abord.

''Yes, and I’ve already got butterflies in my stomach. I just hope everything goes well and that I’m right for the job. I can have a bit of a temper sometimes; that worries me. Actually, it feels strange being here with you, my employer's daughter, and  knowing so many people who work for your father at the park, with that warm rapport that seems to exist among almost all the employees, at least at first glance.''

- Mon père a toujours été comme ça, et ma mère aussi, je crois qu'ils partent du principe que si on travaille tous ensemble, on forme une grande famille.

''My father has always been like that—and my mother, too. I think they operate on the principle that if we all work together, we’re one big family.'' 

- C'est tout à leur honneur, et j'espère vraiment ne pas les décevoir..

''That speaks volumes about them, and I really hope I don't let them down...''

C'est alors que Tamsir et Wash sont entrés, après avoir terminé les travaux de jardinage.

- Un bon café chaud et des biscuits : c'est exactement ce qu'il nous fallait ! s'est exclamé Tamsir.

Just then, Tamsir and Wash walked in, having finished the garden work.
''A nice, hot coffee and some cookies, that’s exactly what we needed!'' Tamsir exclaimed.

- En fait, on a hésité : tout manger ou en garder pour vous. On a fini par décider de vous en laisser !

''Actually, we debated whether to eat them all or save some for you. We finally decided to leave you some!''

- Oui, mais ça sera au prorata du travail fourni dans le jardin ! rajoute Salma.

Yes, but the portion depends on how much work you put into the garden! Salma added.

- Tu vois comment elle me traite ! plaisante Tamsir.

- Tu vois pourquoi j'ai choisi une scientifique plutôt qu'une spécialiste du marketing ! rétorque Wash en riant.

''See how she treats me!'' Tamsir joked.
''See why I chose a scientist instead of a marketer!'' Wash retorted with a laugh.

L'après-midi s'est achevé agréablement autour d'un café et d'un nouveau paquet de biscuits !

The afternoon ended on a pleasant note over coffee and a fresh pack of cookies!
