Comme prévu, l’échographie de datation de Guylaine a eu lieu à 11 h 30 aujourd'hui. À son arrivée, la technologue les a accueillis avec un chaleureux "Bon matin à vous deux !" typiquement québécois.

Une fois Guylaine installée sur la table d’examen, la technicienne l’a prévenue :

- Ne bougez plus, je vous mets un petit peu de gelée sur le bedon. Attention, elle est bien chaude !

Guylaine a sursauté légèrement, un sourire un peu timide aux lèvres.

- Oh oui ! C'est vrai que c'est chaud ! Merci.

As planned, Guylaine’s dating ultrasound took place at 11:30 a.m. today. Upon their arrival, the technologist welcomed them with a warm, typically Québécois "Bon matin à vous deux!"

Once Guylaine was settled on the examination table, the technician gave her a heads-up:
"Don't move now, I'm putting a little bit of warm jelly on your tummy. Watch out, it's quite warm!"
Guylaine startled slightly, a tentative smile on her lips.
"Oh yes! It really is warm! Thank you."

La technologue a manipulé la sonde sur son ventre, les yeux rivés sur son moniteur. Un silence de quelques secondes s'est installé, lourd de concentration. Puis, enfin, son visage s'est détendu.

- Parfait. Regardez ici... On voit tout très bien. Votre utérus est bien positionné, et regardez qui est là, juste au centre.

Wash s'est penché en avant, les yeux fixés sur la lueur de l'écran, essayant de déchiffrer ce qu'il voyait tandis que Guylaine retenait son souffle.

The technologist moved the probe over her belly, her eyes fixed on her monitor. A silence of a few seconds settled in, heavy with concentration. Then, finally, her face relaxed.
"Perfect. Look right here... We can see everything very well. Your uterus is well positioned, and look who's right there, right in the center."

Wash leaned forward, his eyes locked on the glow of the screen, trying to decipher what he was seeing while Guylaine held her breath.

La technologue a poursuivi : 

- Vous voyez cette petite forme qui ressemble à un haricot magique ? C'est votre bébé. Je vais prendre sa mesure, du sommet du crâne jusqu'au bas des fesses... Voilà. Cinquante-cinq millimètres. La machine est formelle : vous êtes à douze semaines d'aménorrhée, et la conception a eu lieu au tout début du mois d'août, le premier pour être plus précise. Donc, pour le premier mai, vous aurez un beau bébé du printemps. Regardez, si je zoome un peu... Est-ce que vous voyez le petit point qui clignote au milieu de sa poitrine ? On va aller l'écouter.

Un clic électronique a résonné, et soudain, le haut-parleur de la machine a diffusé un battement ultra-rapide, un rythme de vie puissant et galopant : tadam-tadam-tadam-tadam.

La voix habituellement grave de Wash n'était plus qu'un murmure en posant sa question.

- C'est... c'est son cœur ? Ça bat tellement vite.

The technologist continued:
"See this little shape that looks like a magic bean? That's your baby. I'm going to take its measurement, from the crown of the head to the bottom of the rump... There. Fifty-five millimeters. The machine is positive: you are at exactly twelve weeks of amenorrhea, and conception took place at the very beginning of August—the first, to be precise. So, by the first of May, you will have a beautiful spring baby. Look, if I zoom in a little... Do you see the tiny dot blinking in the middle of its chest? Let's go listen to it."

An electronic click echoed, and suddenly, the machine's speaker broadcast an ultra-fast heartbeat, a powerful and galloping rhythm of life: tadam-tadam-tadam-tadam.

Wash’s usually deep voice was nothing more than a whisper as he asked his question.
"Is that... is that its heart? It beats so fast."

La technologue a sourit devant leur émotion.

- Oui, c'est son cœur ! Cent soixante battements par minute, c'est un rythme parfait pour son âge. Regardez, il vient de donner un petit coup de pied, il s'agite !

- Je ne sens rien du tout dans mon ventre... et pourtant, il est là, et il bouge..., dit Guylaine d’un ton mêlant étonnement et émerveillement.

The technologist smiled at their emotion.
"Yes, that's its heart! One hundred and sixty beats per minute, it's a perfect rhythm for its stage. Look, it just gave a little kick, it's moving around!"

"I don't feel anything at all in my belly... and yet, it's right there, and it moves..." Guylaine said in a tone blending astonishment and wonder.

Les yeux emplis de tendresse, Wash lui serra la main avec force.

- Mon petit flocon de neige, regarde :  notre petite brume est devenue bien réelle. 

With eyes full of tenderness, Wash squeezed her hand tightly.
"My little snowflake, look: our little haze has become very real."
