When he entered the classroom, the 13-year-olds were buzzing with excitement. Despite his reserved demeanor, his imposing stature immediately impressed the boys and made the girls in the front row whisper.
But the students were already expecting a boring lesson.
Suddenly, he launched into his presentation and announced that they would be working on "The Call of the Wild" by Jack London, from which he read them a few excerpts.

In his deep, slightly theatrical voice, he made them feel the cold, the hunger, the death, the primal instinct, and when he spoke of Buck's struggle for survival, he wasn't just reading the text, he was living it.
In the front row, the girls' murmurs quickly subsided.
The boys in the back, usually restless, sat up straight and began to listen.
However, one boy, more arrogant than the others, mocked him and asked what he knew about the Far North. When Owen calmly replied that he had worked for two years at Barrow High School in Utqiaġvik, Alaska (the northernmost high school), a murmur rippled through the rows and the atmosphere subtly shifted.
He concluded:
"London doesn't write about pretty stories of snow and dog sledding for Christmas break. He writes about hunger, the bitter cold, loneliness, and the primal, untamed force that lies dormant within each of us, even within you... even if we're not yet aware of it."
Then he asked them a question:
"Actually, what would you do if you were lost in that white silence?"
He had thus captured their attention.

His class was the last one of the day. As he left, several boys were talking about him enthusiastically, even wondering if he was going to play sports with them.

When he left school, Owen was hailed by the math teacher.
Let me rewind two days so you know who she is.
Monday morning was the teachers' first day back. Owen met the principal, the administrative staff, and his colleagues. After listening to the principal's speech, he went to the vending machine to buy a bag of cashews. He had barely inserted his coin when the math teacher approached him, a broad smile on her face.
"Hi! I'm Sylvye, with two Ys! My classroom is right across from yours."
"Hi! Oh yeah, you're the math teacher, right?"
"Exactly! Exactly! You know, I've been here for two years, so if I can help you in any way, don't hesitate. We can even go out to eat together tonight if you like; I'll explain how things work and what you need to know about how the school operates."
"OK, thank you, that's very kind," Owen replied quickly, walking away with his cashew nuts, used to attracting female attention.

But Sylvye, with her two Ys, wasn't discouraged. This afternoon, as Owen was leaving school, she called out to him on the steps.
"Hi! How was your first day?"
"Yes, thank you. These students are nice, and my schedule is perfect."
"Oh, they must have been afraid you'd leave, given the teacher shortage. Mine is awful, full of holes, like Swiss cheese."
"Oh, that's a shame for you."
/image%2F1371214%2F20260827%2Fob_afcd64_img-1846-1-3.jpg)
“It doesn’t bother me, you see, I live right next door. If your schedule has any free slots at the same time as mine, if you’re interested, we can always spend some time at my place before heading back to teach the next class.”

- Ah ! Euh... Oui, c'est gentil. Bon, je dois y aller, mon cousin m'attend. Bye !
Because of his looks, Owen is used to advances, but this barely veiled and direct proposition still stuns him!
“Oh! Uh… Yes, that’s nice. Well, I have to go, my cousin’s waiting for me. Bye!”

Arriving at the river, where Ethan was supposed to meet him so they could go to a restaurant with Yumi, Owen didn’t have to wait long.
“Hey lovebirds.”
/image%2F1371214%2F20260827%2Fob_b035e3_img-1854-1.jpg)
- Salut cousin. Comment ça a été cette première journée ?
- Super.
“Hey cousin. How was your first day?”
“Great. The students are nice. A few troublemakers, but nothing new for me. My problem is more with the teacher.”
/image%2F1371214%2F20260827%2Fob_2f7f42_img-1858-1.jpg)
Ethan est inquiet.
- Tu as du mal à t’intégrer ? Tu as des problèmes avec tes collègues ?
Ethan is worried.
"Are you having trouble fitting in? Are you having problems with your colleagues? Are they mad at you because you're a naturalized American?"
/image%2F1371214%2F20260827%2Fob_cfdd8b_img-1856-1.jpg)
"Oh no, nothing like that, don't worry; I'm well integrated, everything's fine on that front."
"Well then, what's the problem?" asks Yumi.
/image%2F1371214%2F20260827%2Fob_13c0d6_img-1851-1.jpg)
"My problem is that there's a math teacher who's really insistent on helping me. She's like a walking paint can; I don't know why, she reminds me of a spider…! And the problem…"
/image%2F1371214%2F20260827%2Fob_6f039a_img-1862-1-2.jpg)
"…is that I think it's not just academic help she wants to give me!" Owen finishes, struggling to keep a straight face.
/image%2F1371214%2F20260827%2Fob_a7f162_img-1863-1.jpg)
Yumi and Ethan look at each other and burst out laughing.
" You see, Yumi, you owe me ten dollars: I told you he was going to be hit on from day one!"
