Ce soir, au coucher du soleil, Oona et Nabil guettaient, tapis parmi les gros rochers près de l'étang, l'arrivée d'un groupe de cerfs de Virginie, un grand mâle et sa harde, qui allaient venir s'abreuver. C'est la saison du brame et, depuis qu'elle a commencé à les suivre, Oona a remarqué que ce mâle en particulier semble infatigable, ayant jusqu'ici réussi à intimider tous ses rivaux.

Chose inhabituelle, Nabil n'a pas dit un mot depuis leur arrivée. Il se contente d'un "hon-hon" lorsqu'Oona lui parle. Il n'est manifestement pas fâché contre elle ; il semble simplement être ailleurs.

This evening, at sunset, Oona and Nabil were lying in wait among the large rocks near the pond, watching for a group of white-tailed deer, a large buck and his herd, to come and drink. It is rutting season, and ever since she began tracking them, Oona has noticed that this particular buck seems tireless, having so far managed to intimidate all his rivals.

Unusually, Nabil hasn't said a word since they arrived. He just makes a "hm-hm" sound when Oona speaks to him. He clearly isn't angry with her; he just seems to be miles away.

Il tient fermement son appareil photo, mais il ne paraît pas vraiment concentré.

He is holding his camera firmly, yet he doesn't seem truly focused.

- Les voilà ! murmure Oona en désignant l'endroit où les animaux sont sur le point d'apparaître.

"There they are," Oona whispers, pointing to the spot where the animals are about to appear.

Mais Nabil, absorbé par ses pensées, ne réagit pas.

Elle commence à s'agacer un peu.

- Allez, bouge ! Il est juste devant ton objectif ! Bon sang, prends des photos !

Nabil prend quelques photos, manifestement sans sa passion habituelle.

But Nabil, lost in thought, doesn't react.

She is starting to get a little annoyed.

"Come on, move! He's right in front of your lens! For heaven's sake, take pictures!" 

Nabil takes a few photos, clearly without his usual passion.

Oona se fâche gentiment.

- Écoute, mon grand, je ne sais pas ce qui t'arrive, mais on arrête tout pour ce soir. On perd notre temps : tu es peut-être là physiquement, mais ton esprit est ailleurs. On reviendra demain, en espérant qu'ils seront encore là ! 

Oona gets gently angry.

- Listen, big guy, I don't know what's happening to you, but we're stopping everything for tonight. We are wasting our time: you may be there physically, but your mind is elsewhere, we will come back tomorrow, hoping that they will still be there!

Qu'est-ce qui peut bien rendre Nabil, d'ordinaire si loquace et enjoué, et passionné par ses photos, aussi distrait et morose ?

What could possibly be making Nabil, usually so talkative and cheerful, and passionate about his photos, so absent-minded and gloomy?
