Comme presque tous les jours, Yumi retrouva Ethan après ses cours de skate à Magog et lui proposa d'aller se promener sur la plage (payante) du lac Memphrémagog, ce qu'il accepta avec joie.

Chemin faisant, ils passèrent devant un bâtiment magogois qui faisait toujours sourire Yumi.....

Like almost every day, Yumi met up with Ethan after his skateboarding lessons in Magog and suggested they go for a walk on the (paid) beach at Lake Memphremagog, which he happily agreed to.

On the way, they passed a Magog building that always makes Yumi smile...

Et si ça faisait sourire Yumi, c'est parce qu'elle imaginait la tête qu'auraient fait les dames de la ligue de tempérance, telles que dépeintes dans les films (pieuses, coincées et acariâtres !), au siècle dernier.

Toutefois, il faut faire la part des choses : si les films les représentent ainsi, ils ne leur rendent pas vraiment justice, car si ces femmes ont lutté pour l'interdiction de l'alcool et des jeux d'argent, qu'elles considéraient comme la cause des malheurs familiaux et des violences conjugales, elles furent aussi des pionnières du mouvement pour le suffrage féminin et les réformes sociales (elles espéraient qu'en obtenant le droit de vote, elles pourraient légiférer pour protéger les femmes et les enfants). Ainsi, dans leur lutte pour la protection de leurs foyers contre l'alcool, elles ont étendu leurs revendications à l'éducation, à l'aide aux plus démunis et à l'égalité politique.

And the reason it makes Yumi smile is because she imagines the faces of the temperance league ladies, as portrayed in movies (pious, uptight, and cantankerous!), would have made in the last century.

However, we must be clear: if films portray them this way, it doesn't truly do them justice, because while these women did fight for the prohibition of alcohol and gambling, which they considered the cause of family misery and domestic violence, they were also pioneers in the movement for women's suffrage and social reforms (they hoped that by obtaining the right to vote, they could legislate to protect women and children). Thus, in fighting for the protection of homes, they extended their demands to education, aid for the poor, and political equality.

Ils ont poursuivi leur chemin et sont arrivés à la plage où Yumi a pris des photos, tandis qu'Ethan repensait avec une pointe de nostalgie au surf qu'il pratiquait avec passion en Californie. Ici, on pratique bien le wakesurf (après un départ tracté, semblable au ski nautique, il faut trouver le bon équilibre pour lâcher la corde et surfer "indéfiniment" sur le sillage du bateau) ; mais Ethan, soucieux de l'environnement, refuse d'utiliser un bateau à moteur polluant pour cela.

They continued on their way and arrived at the beach where Yumi took some photos, while Ethan thought with a touch of nostalgia about surfing in California. Wakesurfing is practiced here (after a towed start, similar to waterskiing, you have to find the perfect balance to let go of the rope and surf "indefinitely" on the wake created by the boat); but Ethan is an environmentalist and refuses to use a polluting motorboat for this.

Pour mémoire, le lac Memphrémagog s'étend sur 50 km de long et se situe à cheval sur la frontière entre le Canada et les états-unis, dans le Vermont. Cette structure est censée représenter le "Lady of the Lake", un légendaire bateau à vapeur qui a navigué sur le lac Memphrémagog de 1867 à 1915. Mesurant 50 mètres de long et pouvant accueillir jusqu'à 1 200 passagers, il offrait des croisières reliant Magog à Newport, dans le Vermont, et constituait à l'époque une attraction majeure pour la région.

As a reminder, Lake Memphremagog is 50 km long and straddles the border between Canada and the United States in Vermont. This structure is meant to represent the "Lady of the Lake," a legendary steamboat that sailed on Lake Memphremagog from 1867 to 1915. Measuring 50 meters long and capable of carrying up to 1,200 passengers, it offered cruises connecting Magog to Newport, Vermont, and was a major attraction for the region at the time.

Ils s'attardèrent longuement, observant les enfants jouer et les allées et venues sur la plage. Cependant, le ciel commençait à s'assombrir et l'air à se charger ; l'orage annoncé approchait à grands pas. Yumi et Ethan reprirent le chemin du Mont Orford (situé à 10 km de la plage) avant qu'il ne soit trop tard.

They lingered for a long time, enjoying watching the children play and the people coming and going on the beach. However, the sky was beginning to darken and the air to grow heavy; the predicted storm was rapidly approaching. Yumi and Ethan headed back towards Mont Orford (located 10 km from the beach) before it was too late.
