Ce matin, Wash a un reçu un texto ( = SMS pour les Français).

Son sourire et son empressement à répondre n'a pas échappé à Shannen.

"Une bonne nouvelle ?" lui demanda-t-elle.

"Rien d'important. C'est Guylaine qui me demande si je veux venir aider pour la vaccination antirabique des ratons-laveurs en fin d'après-midi".

"Sois prudent avec les ratons ; nous, les photographes, on a besoin de nos doigts", lui conseilla Yumi.

"Oui, sois prudent, hein ! Parce que, dans un rancard comme ça, il n'y a peut-être pas que les ratons qui pourraient te mordre !!", ajoute Kyle d'un ton taquin.

"Te fais pas de cinéma, ce n'est pas un rancard, c'est juste qu'on en a parlé ensemble l'autre jour et que ça m'intéresse de voir comment ils font, en plus de leur donner un coup de main si je peux" a rétorqué Wash.

En fin de journée, Wash a rejoint Guylaine dans le secteur du parc national où elle lui avait dit se trouver. Lorsqu'il est arrivé, elle lui a présenté Kévin, son directeur d'études, qui est le superviseur de la campagne de vaccination dans le parc.

Celui-ci serre chaleureusement  la main de Wash en s'écriant : "Tu es donc le photographe talentueux dont Guylaine nous a parlé à plusieurs reprises. Bienvenue et merci d'avoir accepté de venir donner un coup de main. Alors comme ça, tu as commencé des études de biologie et tu as arrêté pour faire de la photo".

"Oui, j'ai pris une année sabbatique quand Eric et Ariane m'ont proposé ce contrat", confirme Wash. Il ne fait pas mention du fait qu'il était en réalité soulagé de quitter pour un temps l'université, où son statut d'amérindien né dans une réserve ne plaisait pas à certains étudiants.

"Quel sera le sujet de ta thèse quand tu reprendras le cursus ?".

"L'influence de la pollution lumineuse sur la migration des oiseaux nord-américains. Ce n'est pas pour tout de suite mais je l'ai déjà largement entamée".

"Très bon sujet. Si tu acceptes, j'aimerais bien la lire quand tu l'auras terminée", intervient Guylaine.

Estimant qu'il n'y a pas de temps à perdre avant la tombée de la nuit, Kévin explique alors qu'ils venaient de vacciner et placer des traceurs GPS sur les trois ratons qui s'éveillaient doucement aux pieds de Guylaine, et qu'il y en avait encore cinq somnolents dans la cage. 

"On va devoir faire vite avant qu'ils se réveillent trop, prends des gants dans la mallette et viens m'aider" dit-elle.

Kévin ajoute : "Je vous laisse tous les deux avec ceux-là. Vous avez encore une cage de six ratons derrière vous à faire ensuite. Pendant ce temps-là, je vais m'occuper de ceux qui ont été pris sur l'autre site, avec d'autres étudiants".

"Ça ne va pas mettre longtemps s'ils sont somnolents" suppose Wash.

"Oh, ça, ça dépend du nombre de boulettes endormantes qu'ils ont ingurgitées, difficile à définir vu qu'il y en a des plus voraces que les autres. Et tu verras que même très somnolents, ils ne sont pas facile à maintenir, ce sont de vrais acrobates, et ils sont très futés !" 

Avant de les quitter, Kévin dit à Guylaine : "Après ça, vous allez aller manger un morceau ensemble, il l'aura bien mérité, et toi aussi. C'est à mes frais, n'oublie pas de m'apporter la note".

"Mais, Kévin...."

"Ta ta ta ta.... allez, travaillez bien, et passez ensuite une bonne soirée bien méritée, vous aurez sans aucun doute plein de sujets sur lesquels débattre pendant le repas", s'écrie le directeur d'études en s'éloignant !

Pas le choix.... Wash va devoir sortir au restau avec Guylaine.  Kyle avait raison, c'est presque un rancard !!

This morning, Wash received a text message.
His smile and eagerness to reply didn't escape Shannen's notice.
"Good news?" she asked him.
"Nothing important. It's Guylaine asking if I want to come help with the raccoon rabies vaccinations in the late afternoon."
"Be careful with the raccoons' teeth; we photographers need our fingers," Yumi advised him.
"Yes, be careful, eh! Because, on a date like this, it might not be only the raccoons who could bite you!!" Kyle added teasingly. 
"Don't get carried away, it's not a date, it's just that we talked about it the other day and I'm interested in seeing how they do it, as well as helping out if I can," Wash retorted.
At the end of the day, Wash joined Guylaine in the part of the national park where she'd told him she was. When he arrived, she introduced him to Kevin, her director of studies, who is supervising the vaccination campaign in the park.
He warmly shook Wash's hand and said, "So you're the talented photographer Guylaine told us about several times. Welcome, and thank you for agreeing to come and help out. She said you started studying biology and then stopped them to do photography."
"Yes, I took a gap year when Eric and Ariane offered me this contract," Wash confirmed. He doesn't mention the fact that he was actually relieved to be leaving the university for a while, where his status as a Native American born on a reservation didn't sit well with some students.
"What will your thesis be about when you return to school?"
"The influence of light pollution on the migration of North American birds. It's not happening right away, but I've already made a good start on it."
"Very good topic. If you accept, I'd like to read it when you're finished," Guylaine chimes in.
Figuring there was no time to waste before nightfall, Kevin then explains that they had just vaccinated and placed GPS trackers on the three raccoons slowly waking up at Guylaine's feet, and that there were still five dozing ones in the cage.
"We'll have to move quickly before they wake up too much. Grab some gloves from the briefcase and come help me," she said.
Kevin added, "I'll leave you two with these. You still have a cage of six raccoons to do next. Meanwhile, I'll take care of the ones that were taken at the other site, with other students."
"It won't take long time, if they're drowsy," Wash asks.
"Oh, that depends on how many sleepy pellets they've eaten. It's hard to tell since some are more voracious than others. And you'll see that even when they're very drowsy, they're not easy to restrain. They're real acrobats, and they're very clever!"
Before leaving, Kevin said to Guylaine: "After that, you're going to go out for a bite to eat together. He'll have earned it, and so will you. It's on me, don't forget to bring me the bill."
"But, Kevin..."
"Ta ta ta ta.... Come on, work hard, and then have a well-deserved evening. You'll undoubtedly find plenty of topics, him an dyou, to discuss during the meal," exclaims the director of studies as he walked away!
No choice.... Wash will have to go out to a restaurant with Guylaine. Kyle was right, it's practically a date!!
