Les photographes du groupe commencent à sentir que la saison des photos d'été se termine, et ils rassemblent tous les clichés qu'ils ont retenus mais pas encore donnés à Shannen pour les inclure dans le Carnet de voyage.

Ce fut le cas notamment pour Wash qui lui a apporté une bonne centaine de photos de balbuzards pêcheurs !

Un peu déroutée par la quantité et l'obligation de sélectionner seulement quelques clichés dans tout ce vrac, elle a demandé à Wash de lui expliquer pourquoi il y en avait autant. Le jeune homme lui a a lors parlé du balbuzard qui est un animal totem dans son clan (rappel : Wash s'appelle en réalité Washaquonasin, ce qui veut dire Hibou gris qui vole la nuit, en langue ojibwée).

Et il lui en a parlé avec tellement de passion que Shannen a fini par admirer ce beau rapace à son tour, et a eu bien du mal à trier les photos pour n'en sélectionner que quelques unes pour la prochaine publication du magazine d'Ariane.

The photographers in the group are beginning to sense that the summer photo season is coming to an end, and they're gathering all the photos they've chosen but haven't yet given to Shannen to include in the Travel Journal.
This was particularly the case for Wash, who brought her a good hundred photos of ospreys!
A little confused by the quantity and the obligation to select only a few photos from all the clutter, she asked Wash to explain why there were so many. The young man then told her about the osprey, which is a totem animal in his clan (reminder: Wash's actual name is Washaquonasin, which means Gray Owl that flies at night in the Ojibwe language).
And he spoke about it with such passion that Shannen ended up admiring this beautiful bird of prey herself, and had a hard time sorting through the photos to select just a few for the next issue of Ariane's magazine.

August 22 - Wash brought me lots of photos to update this notebook. He's been talking to us about the ospreys for months, and when I saw his photos and he told me about this bird's lifestyle, I understood why he's so passionate about this beautiful bird of prey, unlike any other.
The osprey's unique feature is that it doesn't eat "meat," feeding exclusively on fish.

Once its keen eyesight spots its prey, it dives from great heights, talons in front, disappears underwater, then resurfaces carrying a fish that it takes back to its nest to share with its mate or her young, or with its mate, because the pair alternate fishing sessions. It is particularly well-suited for spearfishing because it can close its nostrils to keep water out.

Wingspan: 1.45 to 1.75 m.

They breed relatively late, as it's only around the age of five
to seven years that they choose a mate with whom they will form a lifelong pair. The male and female take turns incubating for
five weeks.

The osprey was nearly driven to extinction because it was considered a pest due to the competition it caused with human fishermen, as well as because DDT in the environment weakened the eggs.
It is now a protected species, and since the ban on DDT, osprey populations are slowly rebuilding. 

Wash returned often to watch over the nest until the couple and their young set off on their long migration to South America, traveling about 300 to 400 km per day. He wished them good luck in his own language, Ojibwe, which is: Ambegish ji-onwaaziwiyamban
