----------
As we learned some time ago (HERE), Aslan's father arrived to spend a month's holiday near his son. He rented a "2 1/2" in a condominium complex very close to the entrance of the national park, so they could be as close to each other as possible.
Tina and Aslan picked him up at the airport in the early afternoon. Since the group's Jeep Cherokee and the park's Range Rovers were all occupied, they had to use the Fiat 500. This prompted an amused reaction from Mr. Aubry, a literature professor who had retired a few months earlier and was a passionate motorcyclist, when he "unfolded" his tall, robust frame of six foot three out of the small vehicle.
"I had to come all this way, to the land of wide open spaces, only to end up spending two and a half hours in a car the size of a yogurt pot!!" he teased them.
"I told you earlier, Dad, that's all we had left today. All the park's vehicles were taken by the patrol. On weekends, they have a lot of work controlling the campers’ behavior,” Aslan explained again.
“Well, to make it up, you’ll lend me your Harley tomorrow so I can explore your famous national park and the surrounding area a bit!” Mr. Aubry retorted with an amused wink, as if he’d been waiting for this very opportunity.
“You’re not missing a trick, are you, Dad!” Aslan replied, laughing.
Tina smiled. Since her arrival, Mr. Aubry and his son had spent their time joking and gently teasing each other. She had immediately felt a great deal of affection for her future father-in-law, a simple, calm, somewhat reserved man, but full of discret humor, just like his son, which gave her an idea of what Aslan would be like in a few years.
Suddenly, the sun broke through the clouds that had followed the heavy rain that morning.
“Look "That: the sun greets my arrival. Isn't that a good omen?"
"Without a doubt, Dad! You see, you're very welcome here," Aslan replied affectionately.
The two lovebirds showed Mr. Aubry around his small apartment, and once settled in, the three of them went to the Jukebox for dinner.
Linda took their order and brought the drinks, then, as Hermione and Michael had just arrived, she went to attend to them.
"Hi Hermione. How was it at the park today?"
(During the summer, Hermione works as a lifeguard at the lake beach.)
"Yes, since the weather wasn't great, there weren't many people. Only two children wandered off, but they were quickly found. Then a paddleboarder bumped into a swimmer, which caused a minor incident." "Nothing serious!"
Meanwhile, Tina, Aslan, and his father were chatting about this and that when Mr. Aubry's expression turned serious.
"Son, you asked me earlier why I brought so much. Well, since you told me you wanted to stay here for your job, I've been wondering if I shouldn't come and live here with you too."
"You'd leave France?" Aslan exclaimed.
"Since your mother passed away and you left for Canada, nothing's keeping me there anymore, you know." "I've been retired for five months. I ride my motorcycle, watch TV, and occasionally go out to eat with old friends. The rest of the time, I'm bored."
Tina looked at Aslan, trying to guess whether he liked the idea or disliked it.
"Of course, if this idea bothers you, I won't go through with it. I know I'm telling you this abruptly and that you weren't expecting it. We'll have to talk about it again later," Mr. Aubry continued, placing his hand on his son's arm in a reassuring gesture.
"Dad, on the contrary, I really like the idea. The fact that you already had a mild heart attack worried me about being so far away from you." "And to be honest, I'd already thought about it, but I never would have believed you'd want to leave France," Aslan reassured him.
Mr. Aubry's eyes misted over slightly.
"Thank you, son. I was so afraid to tell you."
"And besides, at least I'll be there when this adorable little girl makes me a grandfather!" he added. "That is, if you've decided to have children, which I sincerely hope you do." "I hope I'm not shocking you," he added, addressing Tina.
"You're not shocking me in the slightest, Mr. Aubry," Tina replied sweetly, placing her hand on her stepfather's.
"Well, in that case, my dear, to prove it to me, you'll have to start by calling me 'Dad'!"
Mr. Aubry seemed lost in thought for a few moments, then he declared:
"Why do people search for paradise in a hypothetical Eden? It takes so little to find it here on Earth."
Have a nice day :-)
