Le mois dernier, un patrouilleur du parc avait confié à Oona qu’il pensait avoir aperçu une empreinte de patte de lynx près de la rivière.

Last month, a park ranger told Oona that he thought he had spotted a lynx paw print near the river.

Elle était allée vérifier sur-le-champ. Aucun doute possible : il s’agissait bien du lynx. Elle passa plusieurs jours à tenter de cerner ses habitudes ; mais, comme le lynx est justement un animal opportuniste dépourvu de routine fixe, elle eut du mal à déterminer le meilleur endroit où se mettre à l'affut pour le photographier. Finalement, remarquant que ses traces apparaissaient plus souvent dans une boucle de la rivière qu’ailleurs, elle proposa à Nabil d’y passer une journée.

Ce soir, quand le soleil commençait à décliner, Nabil pensait qu'ils avaient patienté pour rien.

- Je pense que c'est fichu pour aujourd'hui ; d'ici un quart d'heure la lumière ne sera plus suffisante.

She went to check it out right away. There was no doubt about it: it was definitely a lynx. She spent the next few days trying to track its habits. However, since lynxes are opportunistic animals with no fixed routine, she had a hard time figuring out the best spot to set up a blind and wait to photograph it. Finally, noticing that tracks appeared more often in a bend of the river than anywhere else, she suggested to Nabil that they spend the day there.

This evening, as the sun began to set, Nabil thought they had waited for nothing.
"I think we're out of luck for today. In fifteen minutes, there won't be enough light left."

- Attendons jusqu’à ce qu’il fasse trop sombre, puis nous reviendrons demain. En attendant, reste aux aguets et garde ton appareil prêt : s’il se montre, il nous repérera presque instantanément et prendra la fuite.

"Let's wait until it gets too dark, and then we'll come back tomorrow. In the meantime, stay alert and keep your camera ready. If he shows up, he'll spot us almost instantly and bolt."

Quelques minutes plus tard, alors qu’ils n'y croyaient plus et s’apprêtaient à quitter les lieux pour retourner bredouilles au chalet....

A few minutes later, just as they were losing hope and getting ready to head back to the cabin empty-handed...

... le gros minet est apparu.

Comme l'avait prédit Oona, il les repéra aussitôt, bouche ouverte, humant l'air, il semblait penser : "ça empeste les humains par ici !" (Ah non ! comme c'est un lynx québécois, il devait plutôt penser "Ça pue le monde en maudit par icitte ! 😄)

Just as Oona had predicted, he spotted them instantly. Mouth open, catching the scent in the air, he seemed to think: "It reeks of humans around here!" (Oh, wait! Since he’s a Canadian lynx, he was probably thinking: "Holy mackinaw, it stinks like people out here, eh!" 😄)

Effectuant un gracieux demi-tour en une fraction de seconde, il prit la poudre d'escampette, loin de cette odeur dérangeante pour un lynx, québécois ou pas !

Spinning around gracefully in a fraction of a second, he took off like a bat out of hell, steering clear of that annoying scent, whether he was a Canadian lynx or not!

Ce n'était qu'un peu d'humour pour se consoler de ne pas avoir réussi à prendre d'aussi belles photos que celles-ci, trouvées sur le net. D'abord, les bébés :
